What do Plato, Descartes, and The Matrix all have in common? All of them study the possibility that our world is just a fantasy. They also demand that we took a good look into the relationship concerning our senses and reality. There is one similarity between all three works that is clear: their writers are skeptical that the real world that surrounds could just be a product of our faulty senses. Can we really rely on them to justify whether or not what we are perceiving is real? â€Å"All that I have, up to this moment, accepted as possessed of the highest truth and certainty, I received either from or through the senses. Plato talks a bit about how the prisoner would feel if he was released into what was actually reality. â€Å"And if he were compelled to look at the light itself, would not that pain his eyes, and would he not turn away and flee to those things which he is able to discern and regard them as in very deed more clear and exact than the objects pointed out?à ¢â‚¬  (Plato, The Republic, Book VII). But we do not actually get to find out in these 2 works what happens when we wake, as if everything that is being perceived is one big dream. Could you imagine how the story would go in The Matrix if the rebels were to find out that upon waking up, they were still in a deception of the senses, as Plato and Descartes described? The main variance in The Matrix, Plato’s The Allegory of the Cave, and Descartes’s Meditation I, is that in the movie, there is a way to get back to the world of reality; Descartes and Plato only suggest that we are either dreaming or have been tricked, and make us speculate if there really is a way back. They propose that the world we know is not real at all, just a mere illusion. So this leads us to the question what is better? Reality, or the ‘ignorance is bliss’ illusion?
